VIII. a+I architecture

VIII. a+I architecture
http://www.aplusi.com/

Navigation:
Most interesting website I had ever seem. There are a lot of interacting between the website and people with a clear understanding of using. It is organized in a really creative way. The first time enter the website, it does not seem like any architecture firm’s website that I had seem. It looks like a website for photo gallery, which also the reason people get attracted and stay with the website. Everything is clearly labeled; therefore, the website is really user friendly. Very well structured website with clear hierarchy! All the categories and sub-categories are list clearly with really organized gridded sample images of projects. Although the impression the website give is new and inexperience, after navigate around will notice that the firm is well experienced and care about their potential client a lot. That is why the website is really easy for everyone to navigate around.

Architecture:
The architecture of the a+I architecture’s website is really well thought out. The structure and orientation are very clear and precise and consistent, which allow people to navigate around easily. In some sense, the overall website seems with elaborate design, which illustrates the precise goal and philosophy of the firm. The website is also really straight forward, what you see is what you get. Two different ways to select project makes the website stronger especially when both option function really well.

Content / Typography:
The impression created by the organization and simplicity of the typography and its interacting with people. Nothing overwhelming, everything appears with just right proportion, giving precise amount at once to give better understanding. The graphic and the layout of the website emphasis how the firm understands the importance of 3d visual effect and creativity in architecture field. The most interesting part of this website is that there is no standard banner as other firm’s website to list out the categories. Only two major contents are shown, which are “sort” and “a+I”. There is nothing I would change to this website. It is really well designed and clearly shows the purpose of it.

Grid / Structure:
This is a very interactive website with consistent structure and grid system after entering any specific categories. The main “sort” and “a+I” icon stay at the same location throughout navigation, which allow people to refer back to the original page to continue searching. However, that also causes problems. The consistent spot of “sort” is somehow also over right on the top of the listed sample images, which allow people to click into to see detail of the project. The consistent location of the search is really strong; therefore, the list of the sample project should be rearranged in different way or different zone of the page. Not as other website, the clean and comprehensible of the website does not lose people’s excitement. Anyhow, the website is clearly promoting an architecture firm in a really creative and interactive way.

Iconography / Imagery:
A very inspired introduction page keeps people interested. All the sample images places as they are photography lay on a table with really realistically view. All the sample images are with consistent size and decent proportion what already give a sense of project. After select any specific project, all the images cover almost the whole page with good quality, which enhance the space and design. Also not all the images are photo some are sketches and plan of the space, which give more life to the project and the firm. There is no confusing about “next” photo. The cursor turns into a cursor with arrow, which allows people to move back and forth between photo. A simple structure website with creative elements helps to keep viewer on the site to create more interaction.

Color Palette:
The black background with contrast white border around each icon and images allows all elements to pop out. Both main icons are highlights with two contrast colors, green and orange. They both are also the most saturated color when compare to other elements. However, that enhances the purpose and importance of both icons. Majority of the texts are in white, which contrast to the black background color and color of images. The texts are also with perfect font size, which clearly shows the purpose.

Site Focus:
The focus of the website is obvious. It is promoting architecture and design in a really creative view. The strongest part of this website is the design of the website. It is design from viewer’s point of view, which make everyone who is on the navigation really comfortable. Also open people’s view about the interconnection between different types of design. The only issue of this well structured website is that the content of each project are not detail enough, which mean I wish there are description about the concept of the project not just the location, size, and date.

VII. ASYMPTOTE Architecture

VII. ASYMPTOTE Architecture
http://www.asymptote-architecture.com/

Navigation:
“Where should I go?” is the first reaction after get into the main page. It is a complicated website. It takes long time to understand how to navigate around. The way the website start is already really different from other website I had seem. The main navigator is an additional page; therefore, there is no need of the first intro page. The hierarchy of the website is really not clear and not organizes. All the categories are not list in a clear way. They follow the form of the background image. Some title of the category overlaps each other and no list of sub-category when cursor moves close to the main category. The center of each page change consistently, which create additional confusion and dizziness. There is no “home” link for people to go back to the original page to see other choice. However, after click different icon realize that by click on the “x” (close) will allow people to go back to the home page. I think when the website is really complicated; at least the “home” option should be obvious for people in order to continue navigation.

Architecture:
The structure of the website well illustrates the experiences that the company had. The first glance of the site gives modern impression; however, the content is not clear. The small font size and the location of the primary categories are not well thought out during the design process. The categories are not obvious and hard to read and follow and they are not place on the consistent location. People have hard time to find other categories when they are already in one and no clear direction of how to get back to the selection page. However, the “main menu” was designed and place on the left bottom corner, which are really not noticeable. It takes long time to realize there is the option. The whole website is considered as an additional page. The original intro page happen to just an intro page and home page is additional page, which is really unusual.

Content / Typography:
The website seems like having a unique way of organizing the typography, but it is confusing for people who use it as first time. It is not user friendly. Also the font size is way too small, which creates vibration on the text. That loses the purpose of the text because people cannot read. As an architecture firm’s website even though the structure of the website is bad, the visual elements, the images, are still playing an important role. All the images are with decent size that tells the story. I will recommend simplifying the website that will be a good way to keep people on the site.

Grid / Structure:
Although the website is hard to navigate around, the structure and grid system are consistent throughout the navigation. After understand how the website functions, everything seems much easier; however, the complicity still give a bad impression especially for people who are not good with figuring out stuff. The whole website lets people feel it move around all the time; therefore, people tend not to pay attention on element that are not moving. If pay attention people will realize there is a stable “menu” bottom banner. The banner should be a little bigger because it is not noticeable and it loses it purpose.

Iconography / Imagery:
As other architecture firm’s website, all the images are with decent size, which allows people to understand the project. There are a lot of unnecessary icons, which did not help people to navigate. There are too many small size arrows around the same location. Also almost all the information are cramped to the middle of the page; however, there are still a lot of space around. The spaces should be use wisely. Now the context and images are located at center of the page and allows people to see other categories that are behind, but they are not clickable until the mini navigation window is close. That is really confusing.

Color Palette:
Midnight blue is the main color of the website with small white text. Although they are contrast color, it does not work. Somehow the blue still feel really bright, which does not really do what the contrast color supposes to do as to pop out the text. The blue background conflicts with the white text when the text is small and not bold. However, the blue enhance the images.

Site Focus:
Promoting the architecture firm is the major purpose of the website, which is shown evidently with good quality of images. The weakness of the website is the structure and the organization of the website. Even though the website structure stays consistent, the weakness still makes the website less user friendly. The biggest issue is the size of the font and the space between because that make people’s eye hurt and cannot focus on reading the content.

VI. UNStudio

VI. UNStudio
http://www.unstudio.com/

Navigation:
Very well structured website with clear hierarchy! Every sub-category is list clearly below major categories throughout navigation, which allow people to see what options are there. The website shows the creativity and strategy of the firm by the organization of the website. Every visit the key image of the home page changes, which emphasis the diversity of the firm. However, the image is not just there to prominence the experience of the firm, it also give some highlight and texture to the page. Overall the website is really organized and thought out. There are 8 categories locate on the top banner with “UNStudio” as the “home” page link and “search” function placed right above and they all situate at the same location during navigation. So far this is the only architecture website has an option for people to “search” and very simple home page that already show a lot.

Architecture:
UNStudio’s website is designed for users. The structure and orientation are very clear and precise and consistent, which allow people to navigate around easily. Even though the overall design of the website is simple, it still shows the complexity of the firm by the number of elements that are listed below the category and sub-category. The organization illustrates the services and experiences of the firm. The website is really straight forward, what you see is what you get. There is “search” function, but the result does not appear on the additional navigator and the search is focus within the website and the firm.

Content / Typography:
The organization and simplicity of the typography gives viewer a good impression of the company. Nothing too overwhelming, everything is design to show with precise amount at once to give better understanding. The layout of the website shows that the designer clearly understands that architecture is a really 3D visual field. So every image is show in a decent size and quality. I really like the top banner menu, but I think the font size might be a little too big compare to other content. They can be slightly small, but still shows the option. There is nothing else I would change to this website. It is really well designed and clearly shows the purpose of it.

Grid / Structure:
The first impression of the website is modernized. Consistent structure and grid system of the website give good impression because it makes viewers easier to navigator around. The main menu stays at the same upper banner and the content stays around the same grid system throughout the whole exploring. There is no dramatic change to confuse people. Because of its clean and comprehensible, the website might loses some excitement and weaken the interaction with people. However, the website clearly shows the purpose of the website, which is to promote an architecture firm. Therefore, the focal point of the page always stays with the images, which also is the only way to help people to understand the style of the project the company capable of.

Iconography / Imagery:
A great introduction image is really important because that will affect viewer’s decision. UNStudio’s website makes a good decision on the choice of the first images and how it is consistently change, which creates the excitement of the website. Usually people get bored with same layout over and over so subtle change is good and important. There are unusual elements on the website and they move around the site throughout the pages. The red and green dots become visible on different spot on different page and not always on the same spot on the same page. After a click the dot bring viewer to a very specific quote, which is a really intelligent way to emphasis the philosophy of the firm and by click on the quote that allow people to go back to the original page. A simple structure website with creative elements helps to keep viewer on the site to create more interaction.

Color Palette:
There are not too many colors. The red element on the page highlights the keys for people to focus such as the name of the firm and the most recent updated elements. The light grey is the major color of the website and with contrast text color, black, which highlight other elements on the site, such as images. In the first glance on the project list page, there are swap color on each project. That creates a little confusion in the beginning; however, it becomes much clear with its purpose after look into more projects. Realizing different color represents different type of project. Although that is a good way to categorize projects, it could be much clearer. Maybe a label can help. However, the overall website is really well-built and modernizes.

Site Focus:
The focus of the website is noticeable. It is promoting architecture and design as the major purpose. The strongest part of this website is that the website cares its viewers a lot. It designs for people to look at design from different point of view. Also, there are one to two different way specialize the website to make it more unique.

V. ATKINS Design Studio

V. ATKINS Design Studio
http://www.atkinsdesign.com/

Navigation:
A very simple and thought out intro page that cares about their viewers. It allows people to choose between html and flash. At that point, there is no hierarchy. The hierarchy happens right after make the choice on the intro page. When the curser rolls over main menu and project sample images of the home page, it creates hierarchy of the website by swap images and color change for the category text. The swap image creates interacting between the site and viewers; however, none of any swap image is a link. Only the color change of the category has extended link to understand the firm. Therefore, I think there is no purpose to have swap image for the sample project images that will decrease the confusion. The top banner is where list of category located and always at the same spot, which allow people to go back and forth between pages. Overall the website is easy to navigate and understand.

Architecture:
The structure and orientation of the website shows the firm is organize and well experienced. The complexity of the company clearly shows on the number of the category that list on the menu bar. The website is really straight forward, what you see is what you get. The permanent menu banner allows people to swatch navigation anytime. This is a really organized way to show the services and the experiences the company offer. Additional navigator does not happen often during navigation. Only the very miner and external information will be on the additional page, which shows the connection of the company to other fields.

Content / Typography:
The organized typography gives people good impression of the company, but the amount of the detail that is shown on the home page is a little overwhelming especially when swap images are not clickable. Beside the swap image issue, everything else works precisely especially the main menu bar, which clearly lists every possible function. For the 3D visual field, architecture, images are playing important roll. Under “project” category, all the project images are shown with decent size and coherent description on the side. Although the website is really organized and shown the company is really well experience, it gives a little out dated feeling. Maybe the design of the website can try something more modern to show that the company is not just well experience, but also moving forward with all the changes in the design field not just the architecture discipline.

Grid / Structure:
Consistent structure and grid system of the website give good impression because it makes viewers easier to navigator around. The main menu stays at the same upper banner and the content stays around the same grid system throughout the whole exploring. There is no dramatic change to confuse people. Because of its clean and comprehensible, the website might loses some excitement and weaken the interaction with people. However, the website clearly shows the purpose of the website, which is to promote an architecture firm. Therefore, the focal point of the page always stays with the images, which also is the only way to help people to understand the style of the project the company capable of.

Iconography / Imagery:
As what I mention earlier the swap images on home page become really distracting especially it is not clickable. However, the same grid project sample layout under the “project” category is really helpful. Most of architecture firm’s website only has a list of project name, but ATKINS has both name of project and also sample image. The sample images are really helpful especially when people know what they are looking for specifically. After click into each sample images, it bring viewer to a detail page, which has project description and more images. There is only one thing that makes people confuse, which is the color on the left as border or banner. It looks like something that could be click to link to additional link.

Color Palette:
Grey and orange seem like the company color scheme; however, that is not clear. When click on different category, it seems like there are color change and the color seems like is correspondent to the left banner color label. However, that is really not clear. Maybe the color should be specified on the menu bar instead, which might make the website even richer. Overall the website is too color, which makes the design of the website a little overwhelming especially the home page. Maybe the project images could be on grey scale and all the categories can be on the specific color that was picked.

Site Focus:
Promoting the architecture firm is the major purpose of the website, which is shown evidently. The website is design for people to use and understand the philosophy and offering of the firm. The publicity and the background and the task of the company are illustrated really precisely and evidently, which might attract some potential clients. Overall the website is really strong. If I have to choose something to change then I will change the color palette of the overall website to be even more consistent.

IV. LAB architecture studio

IV. LAB architecture studio
http://www.labarchitecture.com/

Navigation:
Design wise the website is very creative; the floating icon creates the interacting between people and the site. Even though I think the design is quite interesting, it is a little hard to navigate. It makes people a little dizzy because the icons keep moving around. I think it might give some people hard time to follow what they need. It is good that the icon is not the only way to navigate around the site. There are 8 different categories and they all list on the bottom banner, which make some people life easier. The introduction page is really pleasing because of its color scheme. There is very subtle grey tone background with different color tabs for different categories. Overall, there is nothing really surprising that people cannot handle. It is really organized and structured.

Architecture:
LAB’s website is designed with very precise and consistent structure and orientation. The first impression of the website is modernized. From looking at the number of the category and sub-categories that list out below the menu bar, people already have a sense of the complexity of the company. People can understand the company and know what kind of service the company offers. After click on each tab, it brings up the context, which is what I expected. There is no additional page, which is good and the context page of the category also follow the original category color. The category color becomes the color scheme of the category, which makes the website even more organized. Because of its clean and comprehensible, the website loses some excitement and weak interaction with people. The only really strong interaction page is the home; however, there is no “home” tab to go back to the original page. The only thing that I think should be revised is the contact tab. It brings people to pdf page, which is totally not consistent with the original website.

Content / Typography:
What you see is what you get. The simplicity of the typography gives people good impression on the company, but it loses the hierarchy of the typography apparent to catch people’s attention. I really like the color scheme organization; therefore, I think the font size can be the one that get changed after click. It will be even better if the color tone change after click. I think graphically it will look more interesting and attractive, which will also create interaction between people and website. People will know which option have already been navigated. By the way, the name of the company seems like subordinate because it does not appear again after click into tabs. I think anything can be taken away, but not the company logo. It should be something that always there to remind people, which website and which company is being navigated.

Grid / Structure:
The consistency of the website grid emphasizes the philosophy and the structure of the firm. The bottom banner stays at the same location throughout the whole navigation experience. The content always stays at the right banner and images stay at the left banner. There is no dramatic change to confuse people. The purpose of the website is to promote an architecture firm; therefore, the focal point of the page will always drop on the quality of the images. That is the only way for people to understand the project and the specialty and the ability of the company.

Iconography / Imagery:
As what I said earlier, visual elements are really important for architecture firm because that is how people understand. Under each category, there are multiple projects and there are multiple images could be seems per project; however, that option is not clear. I did not realize there are multiple images to be seem. There is a color bar right above the image, but it is not obvious enough for people to notice that can be click. Maybe the option could be show in other way, such as mini image icon, but unsaturated into the category color scheme.

Color Palette:
LAB’s website has a very precise and consistent color selection. The light grey background with contrast color, black, as the text color and with saturated color tabs make the website much more professional and interesting. Beside color scheme, images selection and size also change the impression the company gives. I think maybe the image can be bigger. Now the image banner occupies same space as the content, which I do not think the content should be there the whole time. It should be able to close when not needed then allow the images to enlarge.

Site Focus:
The purpose of the website is obvious shown. It clearly introduces the purpose of the firm and its design philosophy as architects. It brings a certain degree of publicity and also tells a story about the office in general. From the website we know, the firm cares about the viewer a lot; therefore, it is really easy to navigate around. It can attract a lot of potential client and future architect to continue navigate the website or even have further interaction to the firm.

III. Brown + Storey Architects Inc.

III. Brown + Storey Architects Inc.
http://www.brownandstorey.com/

Navigation:
Graphically, the home page of the website is really pleasing; however, it is hard to navigate around. There are 8 different categories. The only sense of hierarchy is the different font sizes and colors. Especially, when the cursor moves across the different tabs, there is no obvious visual difference or switch of finger icon. That is really confusing especially on the info bar; not just the word “info” will link to other page. It is the whole bar, but the images on the bar make people think it actually has several links. The page does not always keep the main tabs up on the top for backtracking. Instead, it only allows two small icons to go back and forth between pages, but I think it should be label at least “home” to clarify the use of the icon.

Architecture:
B+SA’s website does not seem consistent in the page design and the way it is structured and oriented. The architecture behind the site is not that organized. Even it tried to have an underlay of the structure behind the first home page; it does not help in its design and navigation. It has the usual tabs such as projects, publications, competitions and other related tabs; however, each has different color and fonts and size. Graphically, this is really distracting to navigate around the site and it makes the architecture of the site seem over decorated rather than a design discursive application.

Content / Typography:
Different tone of orange color fonts and their font size are the key elements that create the hierarchy in the website. Other than that, nothing is really that prominent. The first glance of the website, it gives a really pleasing impression; however, it does not consist. “Info” tab bring to different kind of design page, which is really different from the home page. That even includes the color scheme of the site. Other tabs on the home page links to total different design pages, which feels like in other website. The only consistent icon throughout the pages is the title of the firm. Although each tab does not direct you to the exact information page, it is not that clear in terms of an obvious switch between a text oriented page and an image oriented page. The content is present, yet not designed to be visually satisfying and navigating. I also realize the “back” tab does not work There is no way to go back to the previous page. Also there is not “home” tab that allow people to go back to navigate other categories..

Grid / Structure:
The structure and the color of the site stay consistent. The consistence of the pages allows people to navigate around the site without any questions. The website to promote an architecture firm; therefore, the focal point of the page always on images that is how people understand the projects, the style of the company, and the ability of the firm.

Iconography / Imagery:
Overall, the entire website stays consistent on two different grid structures, but with many different color scheme. Home and info page have same layout and all other categories follow another layout. Under the two layouts, each page is obviously related to the previous page and it would be read as a whole cohesive website. Architecture is a visually oriented field; therefore, the focus of each page is obviously an image. As other architecture website, there are a lot of images to see and understand projects on this website. In this website, the images are all present on the left banner for people to select. A good thing that I see on this website that I have not seemed on others yet is the “text” function. I like how it is oriented on the side that allows people to click on it when needed not a small pop out box. In general, the website is too scattered and not organized in hierarchy and lacks a focal point. Everything seems to be equally important and weighs similar important value.

Color Palette:
B+SA’ website seems to be pretty consistent with the color use at a first glance. However, different tone of orange color does not continue throughout the whole navigation experience. However, the colors do speak a language of subtle and well-experienced. I think they might try to show the complexities of the firm; however, it fails to represent true design intelligence and innovation through web design. All the additional color of the sub-categories pages does not help with understanding projects. If the point of the color change is to emphasis the difference, maybe it should not be done in contrast color. Maybe that is the style or follows company philosophy, but it is not my style.

Site Focus:
The purpose of the website is obvious introducing the office and its design philosophy as architects. It brings a certain degree of publicity and also tells a story about the office in general. It contains basic information about the firm and the projects. The website supposes to represent the company; however, the site is just not a well-designed, at least from an emergent or contemporary point of view. It speaks experience, yet lacks modernization and ambition and creativity. The unorganized website is hard to attract any potential client and future architects to look for job. People would not buy the product from an unorganized firm. Maybe the website should be update with the newest design with certain level of consistence and organization.
